Monsal Dale, Deep Dale and Millers Dale
Difficulty: Medium
Length: 11.3 miles
Your walk starts from a large layby (Wheel Lane bus stop). Start your walk by heading back towards Magpie Mine, stop and enjoy a visit to the site and admire the ruined workings and learn about its history, entry to the site is free.
Your walk then heads towards the village of Sheldon, from there onwards towards the Deepdale nature reserve. You now follow the river towards Monsal Head, joining the Monsal Trail for a short section. Drop down from the trail to Water-cum-Jolly Dale. Cross the bridge and head back along the River Wye (this section is muddy after rain, suitable footwear will be required). The path winds along to Cressbrook Dale, past the old mill. From this point the walk climbs steeply uphill before heading towards Brushfield. Continue to follow the path and head back to Deepdale, retracing your earlier steps. This time you will take the other path slowly heading back up to the car.
The walk takes in lots of beautiful scenery and glorious views of the old Mills.
Further Information
Magpie Mine is a former lead mine located in Derbyshire. It was one of the most productive lead mines in the county, and operated from the 16th century until the 20th century. The mine is notable for its deep shafts, some of which reach depths of over 700 feet, as well as its long adit, or horizontal tunnel, which runs for over a mile. The mine was closed in the early 20th century and has since been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The surface remains of the mine are open to the public and include the Magpie Mine engine house and a visitor center.
