Begin your journey by strolling through Matlock town, following the course of the River Derwent as you gradually ascend towards the Lumsdale Valley Heritage site. While access to the heritage site may be subject to opening times, a visit is highly recommended to witness its industrial past. From Lumsdale, the path climbs steeply through enchanting mixed woodlands, eventually leading you onto quiet country lanes. These peaceful roads guide you towards Ravensnest Tor and Butterley Top, both renowned for their panoramic vistas across the Derbyshire landscape. Continue your walk across picturesque farmers' fields until you reach the connecting path for the Crich Memorial. This prominent beacon stands as a poignant tribute to the fallen of the Sherwood Foresters, Worcester Foresters, and Mercian Regiments during the Second World War. Descend steeply through woodland from the memorial to join the historic Cromford Canal. Here, you have the option to conclude your walk at Whatstandwell station, conveniently located on the Derwent Valley Line, or extend your exploration by an additional two miles along the tranquil canal towpath to Ambergate station for your return train journey. This varied walk offers a rewarding experience through diverse landscapes and significant historical landmarks, all within easy reach of public transport links.
