Matlock, Lumsdale and Crich
Difficulty: Hard
Length: 13.7 Miles
A lovely walk through mixed woodlands, farmers fields, quiet country lanes and old canals.
This walk especially suits those using public transport as it starts and finishes at train stations on the Derwent valley line (hourly service to Derby and Notts).
Starting at Matlock station, head through the town next to the river and gradually up the to the Lumsdale Valley Heritage site, this is only open at certain times so look at the internet first but well worth a stroll if you can. From here you walk steeply up through mixed woodlands before joining a series of quiet country roads heading over towards Ravensnest Tor and Butterley Top (both with great views). Continue following the paths now mostly across farmers fields until you reach the link path to Crich memorial, this huge beacon commemorates those lost from the Sherwood Foresters, Worcester Foresters and Mercian Regiments (sorry if I left anyone out) during the second world war. Head steeply down through the woodland from here and join the old Cromford canal, at this point you can choose to finish the walk at Whatstandwell station or walk the extra 2 miles to Ambergate before getting the train home.
